Take courage, it is I, don’t be afraid!

Monday, August 16, 2021, the OFM the Province of St. Michael the Archangel was in a great joy; five brothers without hesitation made a lifelong pledge of the three vows of obedience, poverty, and chastity in accordance with the example of St. Francis of Assisi. The five brothers are Br. Guido Ganggus, OFM, Br. Rolansius Lantur, OFM, Br. Yohanes Wahyu Prasetyo, OFM, Br. Wilfridus Papin, OFM, and Br. Abril Dos Santos, OFM. The motto of their solemn profession is: “Take courage, it is I, don’t be afraid!” (Mark, 6:50).

The Minister Provincial, Br. Mikael Peruhe, OFM led the mass. He was accompanied by Br. Agustinus Nggame, OFM and Br. Yustinus Setiadi, OFM. This mas was live-broadcasted through OFM Indonesia’s YouTube channel in collaboration with the Social Communication Commission of Sacred Heart Kramat Parish. Due to the pandemic situation, the invitees were limited to representatives of each houses in Jakarta. Following the government policy, a very strict health protocol is implemented, making sure that the celebration continued solemnly. In his homily, Br. Mikael Peruhe, OFM emphasized 3 important things from Jesus’ invitation to the disciples. First, Jesus left the crowds right when there was high demand of him doing more miracles. Thus, we are supposed to be brave to leave the mundane pride to freely work on our ministries. Second, Jesus invites us to remain in the silence of prayer as he left the crowds to remain in the silence of prayer. St. Francis has reminded us to find silence in prayer amidst our busy life of ministry; that we gain strength from God himself. Third, we are invited to always hold on to God in the midst of our stormy life. We need to learn from St. Peter who asked Jesus to help him when he was drowning in a raged water; our human limitations are not able to help us fight the storms ourselves.

At the end of the mass, representing the five brothers, Br. Rolansius Lantur, OFM expressed his gratitude to God for the grace of the vocation that has been bestowed on them. The motto, “Take courage, it is I, don’t be afraid!” depicts the journey of their vocation, which is coloured by storm of fear, anxiety, and doubt. However, through all the storms they found the strength in God, who has made them courageous to decide to be Franciscans for the rest of their life. The four brothers sang the song of Mary as an expression of gratitude for her accompaniment as well as asking her for further guidance. Afterwards, Br. Mikael Peruhe gave them rosaries, were blessed by Pope Francis, for them to pray and without hesitation asking for the help of Our Lady. May the blessings of St. Francis of Assisi always accompany the journey of their vocations. Pace e Bene.
